This is a very important project. On the outside it won't be pushing us forwards but behind the scenes, it will be doing as much for us as any other project. By making ourselves friendly to other languages and cultures, we will grow and gain the benefit of talent and committment not available to us within the English-speaking world.
Increasingly, computer systems will have to fit around people. There is a possibility that any system we design could be sold on as a third party system as other countries are catapulted into the computer age.
I foresee this project as an ongoing one, one that will have a permanent status, probably an office within our community. We will always be producing documents and information and when people pay their subscription they will expect to be included - that is the job here. More than that though, at a higher level, it is about developing strategies for simplifing such communications problems as we expand across multiple languages, perhaps pursuing a dual policy of manual translation whilst developing Jimbo's friend, the Universal Translator. On a logical and physical level it will be about designing a system which allows for all the documentation to be logged and stored, spewing out requests for translation and compiling translated documents whilst providing a simple interface from the site. The adoption of Unicode should begin as soon as possible (supported in Java and coming in Rebol).
As we become more advanced and the tools become available for interactivity, the problems of multi-lingual IRC sessions and mailing lists will need to be addressed.
We are seeking a document here addressing each and all of these concerns - some of it is technical, some of it linguistic - and I expect a similarly matched team to be assembled. I would like to see us co-operating fully with the Amiga Translators Organisation, and maybe see them becoming a permanent feature in our community, or at least open a consulate here. I think we both can only benefit from closer ties.
